Lord’s Prayer: Introduction and the First Petition

After completing the lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Write out from memory the Introduction, and summarize what it means.

  • Describe why the title “Father” is appropriate for God.

  • Describe why the Introduction is addressed to “Our Father” and not “My Father.”

  • Write out from memory the First Petition, and summarize what it means and how this is done.

  • List several ways in which God’s name is made ‘hallow’.

  • List several ways in which God’s name is profaned.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Now we turn our attention to a specific prayer—the Lord’s Prayer. It has been referred to as the Perfect or Model prayer as well as the Disciples Prayer. Why do you think that is? If you answered it is because it was the prayer Jesus taught His own disciples, you are correct! Further, in Luke 11:1-4 we find that this is the model for prayer that Jesus taught at the request of His disciples. The example of Jesus is always one we should follow

It is common to divide this prayer into an introduction, 7 petitions (sections or segments), and a conclusion. It is significant that the first set of petitions deal with God, and the second set of petitions deal with man—surely indicating the place God is to have in our lives and in our prayers.

Introduction

Our Father, who art in heaven.

First Petition

Hallowed be Thy Name.

Second Petition

Thy kingdom come.

Third Petition

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Fourth Petition

Give us this day our daily bread.

Fifth Petition

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Sixth Petition

And lead us not into temptation

Seventh Petition

But deliver us from evil.

Conclusion

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

It is important to know that only children of God can rightly call God their Father. We become God’s children through an adoption process—a spiritual one though, and not one of flesh or of the body. This adoption begins when we are born again, receiving Jesus as our Savior and our Lord. With this adoption comes a unique and special fellowship with other believers.

What does the Bible say about this unique and special fellowship with other believers and with God? Please summarize what the following verses tell us.
