What is it to be delivered from evil?
In this petition we pray to be ‘delivered’ from evil; that is, we pray that our lives would be free from evil, and delivered from all its consequences and effects. All evil is the consequence of sin, and specifically in this petition we are seeking our Lord’s gracious help in preserving us from all evil:
evil of our bodies—including sickness, pain, thirst, and hunger;
evils of our hearts—including unbelief, sorrow, despair, anxiety, and worry;
evils of property—including war, floods, famine, riots, and poverty;
evils against honor—that is, disgrace, slander, lies, or anything that may ruin our reputation.
We will experience many ‘deliverances’ in our lives, in fact, many in which we may not even be aware. But according to 2 Timothy 4:18, when does our final deliverance occur?
What do the following passages tell us regarding our deliverance from evil?
